The logo for Universal Martial Arts Academy (UMAA) is influenced by
ancient Egyptian symbols because we recognize that all martial and
healing science originated in Africa. This is the true root of our
knowledge. Our logo has earth colors because we recognize that
humans are a part of nature, and martial science is connected to
nature.
The sticks represent Eskrima. The fact that they are crossed shows
understanding of angles of attack, and symbolizes the four directions
of earth. The position of the sticks and fist is similar to the symbol for
Nieth--ancient Egyptian deity who was the creator of all matter and
life. Nieth is also the protector of warriors.
The fist is universal in all arts. It represents the martial side of the
art; courage; self confidence; power; strength; and standing up for
what you believe in.
Mamba snakes are used because they prefer peace but when
threatened will fight fiercely to defend themselves, striking
repeatedly. In African martial arts, mamba snakes represent speed.
Ancient Egyptian stick fighters would rub mamba oil on their sticks
for protection. The snakes also represent the Jujitsu in our art
because of their small, circular, coiling motions around the fist. The
green mamba (on top) is the more passive snake. The black mamba
(on the bottom-called black because its mouth is black) is more
aggressive. These symbolize defensive and offensive fighting
strategies, as well as awareness of yourself and your surroundings.
The knife represents cutting through ignorance and negativity. It is a
tool as well as a weapon-it can be used to build or to defend yourself.
The arrows represent opposing forces of motion and universal
movement.
Colors:
The green of the green mamba represents self respect and love for
others; growth; peace; and prosperity. The olive green of the black
mamba represents the path toward self perfection.
The brown of the fist represents the earth (our roots), and stability in
life.
Black represents our unlimited potential.
The silver of the knife represents positive energy, balance, patience
and perseverance.
The white in the name represents honesty, integrity and trust--all we
have is our name so we must keep our integrity.
